LEADERSHIP DOJO EXPERIENCES

Creating a learning organization goes beyond the product teams learning new skills and approaches to delivering value. In all of the organizations we have helped, the leadership group has also needed and embraced learning new skills and ideas to help their teams and rethink how they lead, guide, and grow.

Are Leadership Experiences Also Six Weeks Long?

No.

All leadership dojos are unique. Concepts to explore, leadership availability, and reporting structures are just some items that effect the duration and delivery of the experience.

Learning Outcomes

All leadership dojos have been highly customized in duration and content. Overall there have been a few common threads:

  • What is a product team / organization? How do we get there?

  • New ways of leadership and understanding where the friction is in delivery

  • What should we measure? How?

Here are 3 samples that we have done that worked well:

  • VP comes in with their direct reports to experience how product teams build products. The goal was for this group to understand terms and techniques, along with grow empathy for their employees. This was done over the course of a half-day, hands on dojo experience (1-day). All VPs came through, which then led to their teams coming in for 6-week experiences.

  • Senior management experience with the goal of understanding product teams, structure, ‘where to start’, and ‘what to measure. This was a group early on in their transformation with the need to align on ‘where they were going and why,’ along with how to start. This experience was done remote, spanning 2 half-day hands on workshops that created their leadership backlog of experiments. Weekly 1 on 1 coaching supported these experiments along with the full group sharing learnings weekly. This experience led to senior management removing many of the barriers to teams being successful that exist ‘outside the team,’ and led the organization down a path of simple continuous improvement.

  • Architects and management experience with the goal of rolling out large initiatives to restructure and align teams. This group and organization treated a new initiative at a leadership level as their ‘product’. This team wanted to understand how to rethink how they rolled out initiatives, taking a more ‘customer centric (employee)’ view of the work. This experience was 90 minutes daily for 6 weeks. The team would come together to plan, work, learn, and share then spend the rest of their days experimenting (individually or in groups) to share the next day.
